The Asterias Village Resort is located 2km south of the port of Hersonissos (Limenas), between the traditional villages of Koutouloufari and Piskopiano. It is set amphitheatrically on the hillside, offering a stunning view of the sea. You can use the Asterias Village Resort as a starting point to explore the region’s picturesque villages, discover sandy beaches with water sports facilities, visit archaeological sites like the Minoan palace at Malia, as well as other places of interest, and of course go down to the port of Hersonissos for a taste of its cosmopolitan nightlife.
Traditional villages: Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, Ano Hersonissos
Koutouloufari is a traditional Cretan village with cobbled lanes and stone-built houses displaying elements of Cretan folk architecture: arches, arched lintels, inner courtyards with vine arbours that provide shade (and grapes) in the summer, and more. From Koutouloufari it is a quick walk to Hersonissos along a hilly road through olive groves.
Piskopiano is another traditional village, built on the mountainside with a view of the Cretan Sea. Here, apart from the picturesque narrow streets with the traditional houses, it is also worth visiting the Menelaos Parlamas Museum of Rural Life, housed in a 19th century stone-built olive mill, with an extensive collection of artefacts relating to Cretan houses, tapestries and weaving tools, and other collections reflecting rural life in Crete (wine-press, raki still, oven, agricultural implements, and more).
Ano Hersonissos, in contrast to the touristy port of Hersonissos (Limenas), is a quiet traditional village perched on a hillside, with a lovely sea view. The village has beautiful stone houses, two picturesque churches and a village square with cafés, tavernas and shops, which is a meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
